Pearls before SWIPE?

DJ "Trouble" Coffman was surprised recently when he sat down yesterday to read his favorite newspaper comic, Stephan Pastis's Pearls Before Swine. It appeared that Coffman and cohort Bob McDeavitt's Brick of Silence, an ongoing gag in the Yirmumah strip, made its first newspaper appearance -- as a towel -- in this strip.

DJ Coffman, usually one to shy away from controversy and the spotlight, had this to say in his blog about the strip:

"We'’re making their jobs much easier, aren'’t we? Too bad we can'’t steal their watered down garbage that'’s fit for papers, eh? Nah, that stuff won'’t fly online. Of course, we here at Yirmumah can'’t PROVE any of this.. it'’s just, uh, '“speculation'” and 'commentary'. yeah.. that'’s the ticket."

Could this lead to a whole line of swipes from the cartoonists in the print world? Should we expect a blue troll to appear and eat Cathy? Will Garfield start playing video games and spew profanity? The possibilities are endless. Endless and delicious.

Gimme a fucking break. Like the idea is so brilliant that two people couldn't have come up with it on their own?

Not within the same amount of time-- I would imagine not. It's pretty darn close in my opinion.

Hell, if PBS's gag was such an unforgiveable ripoff the producers of Get Smart should have the rights to brutally murder the creators of Yirmumah since that show had a "Cone of Silence" DECADES before the internet. Yirmumah's strip seems like a needlessly brutal rebuttal to something even the strips author admits was more than likely a coincidence. It just seemed cheap and petty. This is the 21st Century. Lets try to act like reasonable civilized adults. The same jokes get retold all the damn time. Getting brutal and indignant like that makes them look childish and petty. But then being brutal, petty and childish IS the foundation Yirmumah's philosphy of "Humor" is built upon

Lets not forget that comic authors prefer to craft their strips some time in advance. Particularly syndicated strips. PBS creator claims he crafts his a month or more beforehand. So the creator of PBS more than likely finished that strip BEFORE Yirmumah made his. But then most people on the web like to jump to conclusions without knowing the full story.

Yirmumahs creators should have been mature and ignored it.
